Women’s International League for Peace and Freedom (WILPF) is the oldest women’s peace organization in the world. WILPF’s herstory dates back to the Mother's Day Proclamation, written by Julia Ward Howe in 1870. After the carnage of the Civil War, Howe called for a Congress of Women to promote the "great and general interests of peace." The first International Congress of Women took place in Paris in 1878, and it was attended by suffragettes from around the world.

In 1915 during World War I, the International Congress of Women met and rebranded to become the Women’s International League for Peace and Freedom. Jane Addams was co-founder in the United States, and she was the first President of WILPF. Since 1920, WILPF has maintained a headquarters in New York City, with Consultative Status at the United Nations. In 1931, Jane Addams received the Nobel Peace Prize.

Our branch focuses on protecting reproductive rights and addressing the threat of Christian Nationalism in the U.S. We partner with the Founding Mothers Movement, a strategic plan to unifying women's groups and demand gender equity and global peace. The Peace Pentagon branch in southwest Virginia also seeks to empower the International Court of Justice with mandatory jurisdiction over nation-state conflicts – the most direct path to end war and contain the Military Industrial Complex fed by the War Pentagon in northern Virginia.
